When you are recruiting for a Scrum Master role, you want to ask interview questions that are more profound than just there knowledge of Scrum. You want to make sure that the Scrum Master you are recruiting embodies the Agile values. Here is a list of interview questions that I have used before and the reason why i would ask each of these questions.
1: How do you determine the length of your sprints?
Sprint length is not one fit for all but should be more depending on the project and the organisation. This is something fundamental that each ScrumMaster must understand.
2: What sources of learning do you use?
In this interview question, I want to understand if the candidate is actually embodying the value of Scrum and continuously improving his/her skills and understanding. You want a Scrum master who is continually investing in self-development and keeping himself up to date with the latest techniques and tools.
3: What is an empirical process and how does it fit into Scrum framework? Scrum is based on the empirical process; every single scrum master should be able to tell what are the three pillars of the empirical process and how they fit into Scrum.
4: How can you estimate a User Story? What types of estimates do you know? Story point estimation is one of the most common estimation technique, but it isn’t the only one. Depending on the Scrum team, Scrum master should use the most appropriate method and sometimes #noestimates might be the best way.
5: In every organisation, you will find difficult people. How would you deal with a difficult team member in your team? (Do I need to say why we need to ask this question?)
6: What would your response be if your new Scrum Team said: “we are an excellent team, and we don’t need Retrospective”? http://www.agileguru.xyz/agile-blog/article/agile-retrospectives/
7: From your opinion, what is the point of the daily scrum? Why do you think it’s important? The Scrum master should be able to explain the benefits of each of the Scrum ceremonies because when he/she is introducing Scrum to a new team, the team will only adopt it if they know what benefits they will gain from it
8: Role of a Scrum Master is a servant leadership role. How is servant leadership different from a managerial role and traditional leadership role.
9: What is the difference between Agile and Scrum?
10: What is INVEST and where do you use it?
11: How do you motivate your scrum team?
